CIBORIUS: Robots in action

13. April 2021

Robots start in the security service

Artificial intelligence has reached the security industry. The Berlin-based CIBORIUS Group is demonstrating what will one day be standard: Smart robots take on important tasks in security and building inspection. The requirements of Industry 4.0 for intelligent and automated safety solutions are higher than ever before. And CIBORIUS is leading the way with its Security Robotics product solutions. Customised robots are prepared and trained for their use. At the same time, customers receive adequate support during the assignment.

Industry 4.0 (or the fourth industrial revolution) refers to the close connection between production and state-of-the-art information and communication technology. The first industrial revolution describes mechanisation based on water and steam power, while the second industrial revolution describes mass production thanks to assembly lines and electrical energy. The third industrial (digital) revolution is based on the use of electronics and IT with the aim of automating production.

You are reliable, resilient, always focussed and fully networked. CIBORIUS is Germany’s first provider of robot-assisted security solutions and has founded an independent company for this purpose under the name Security Robotics. Robots suitable for security services from various manufacturers are programmed there to meet individual customer requirements. These can be purchased or leased.

The all-terrain robot Spot®

At the centre is the all-terrain four-legged robot Spot® from Boston Dynamics, which has already completed missions in the Chernobyl danger zone and on various oil platforms. The IT experts at CIBORIUS have taken care of it and programmed it to meet the requirements of modern security services. They utilise technologies such as machine learning and computer-based vision. The latter describes the ability to recognise objects in digital image material and process them accordingly.

Recognises people andobjects

For example, the agile walking robot has a high-resolution 360° all-round camera, ultra-bright LED light and a light detection system (LiDAR) on board, which relies on the reflection of electromagnetic waves to measure and map the space in front of it.
The robot can recognise and assign people and objects, perceive changes in the environment and also read instruments precisely. If an unknown person is on the premises or a factory door is open after production has finished, it immediately reports this information with live images to the control centre. It does not follow a rigid programme, but uses dynamic algorithms to learn independently from every new situation. If the control centre gives the all-clear for a specific object, for example because it is a new or additional machine in the production line, the robot recognises this object from then on and no longer sounds the alarm.

Increases quality and reliability

The robot can walk forwards, backwards and sideways, climb stairs and is also ready for use in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. “Quality and reliability in property protection are significantly enhanced by the use of robots,” confirms Managing Director and company founder Andreas CIBORIUS. “The robot is not distracted, can process a lot of information at the same time and never gets tired during use,” emphasises the boss, who wants to use his robots successively for many tasks in the protection and security industry. In addition to the four-legged robot, other robot models are currently being prepared for service. Depending on the terrain requirements and customer needs, CIBORIUS provides the appropriate robot technology. Infection protection in facilities and buildings will also be an important field of activity.

Man and machine – an integrated team solution

Although the robot fulfils its tasks 100% safely and reliably, humans always retain control over it. “Each of our robots is not only monitored by the control centre, but also has a human attendant on site,” explains CIBORIUS. While the robot watches, checks and reports, the human makes the ultimate decision and takes action when it is sensible and necessary. In this way, modern safety work becomes an integrated team solution consisting of man and machine.

The CIBORIUS Group

The CIBORIUS Group has five locations throughout Germany and offers cross-industry security and service solutions. The company was founded in 2006 by Andreas CIBORIUS and serves well-known clients in the private and public sectors and their own organisations.
